One American dollar is equal to 1 cedi and 70 pesewa in Ghanaian money. It is amazing how much you can get for so little here. The night market is a market that is only about a five minute walk, at the most, from my hostel. It is nowhere near the size of Madina market but it has everything I need. Well, close to everything. I get my drinking water from there. They sell sashays, which are bags of purified water. Each bag is about 500ml and costs about 10 pesewa. So I can stay hydrated safely and it’s cheap! We learned about this place, it’s an NGO that sews sashay bags together creating recycled bags. It is pretty neat, and I want to get some to bring back to the states. You see a lot of trash lying around because deposing trash is expensive here. You see sashay bags everywhere.

The neatest thing about the night market is there are a few stands that sell prepared food. You can get a meal of joloff (A very Ghanaian dish, which is basically really spicy rice) and beans for 1 cedi, that’s less than an American dollar! You can also get an amazing egg sandwich that is filled with peppers and onions for 1 cedi. The night market beats McDonald’s dollar menu any day. I love it! You know what is funny, there are no McDonalds in Ghana, but there are a couple KFCs.

I helped, well kind of just watched, Kelly’s roommate make fried plantains and red red, another very Ghanaian dish, today. It was amazing! And something I think I will be able to make once I come back home. I am very excited about it.

One of my favorite things here it fanchoco, it is Ghana’s version of ice cream and its delicious. It basically takes like frozen chocolate milk. It comes in a plastic casing, and you bite off the top and squeeze out the deliciousness. There is also fanice, which is the vanilla version. It tastes a little sweeter, somewhat like frosting. There is also a strawberry flavor, which is my least favorite. It tastes very artificial and just makes me want real strawberries which I will not see for the next four months. But it’s okay, because like I’ve said the pineapple here comes straight from heaven.
